- KonferenzbeitragConcept of a Universal Mobile Application Accessing Environmental Information Systems(Innovations in Sharing Environmental Observations and Information, 2011) Schlachter, Thorsten; Düpmeier, Clemens; Geiger, Werner; Weidemann, Rainer; Ebel, Renate; Tauber, Martina; Zetzmann, KlausConsidering the development of mobile applications, it can be noted that implemented processes often are very similar. The concept presented here describes a declarative approach to generating an entire family of mobile applications. These applications are based on descriptions of their functionality and appearance. Standard data formats are used for information interchange. Appropriate tools enable a cross-platform development and minimize the effort required for this.
- KonferenzbeitragElectronic Commerce für das Umweltinformationssystem Baden-Württemberg(Umweltinformatik ’00 Umweltinformation für Planung, Politik und Öffentlichkeit, 2000) Kramer, Ralf; Tomczyk, Peter; Tochtermann, Klaus; Schwartz, Susanne; Rainbold, Eduard; Geiger, Werner; Weidemann, Rainer; Henning, Inge; Reichel, Egbert; Ebel, Renate; Weissenbach, KurtCurrently, public environmental information systems (EIS) on the Internet provide all users with information free of charge. Costs for providing the information and reduced public budgets on the one hand, commercial use of these information through third parties on the other hand raise the question how far public authorities could charge for accessing information in public EIS. In this paper, we use the EIS of the state BadenWürttemberg, Germany, as an example to study the integration of electronic commerce functionality into a public EIS. Our study reveales that the technical integration is possible, but still changes of current organisational procedures are required to fully exploit the technical opportunities.
- KonferenzbeitragEnvironmental Information Network of Baden-Wuerttemberg – Integration of the Authorities’ Environmental Information(Sh@ring – EnviroInfo 2004, 2004) Schlachter, Thorsten; Ebel, Renate; Geiger, Werner; Sawade, Annette; Tauber, Martina; Weidemann, RainerWith the citizens being entitled to be provided with environmental information, the quantity of the latter increased as did the efforts needed to find the desired information on the many distributed web sites. The Environmental Information Network of Baden-Wuerttemberg (UINBW) presented here shall serve as a central access platform that facilitates search by offering a thematically structured approach and various search options to the user.
- KonferenzbeitragHUDA: A Toolbox for Environmental Report Production(Umweltinformatik ’98 - Vernetzte Strukturen in Informatik, Umwelt und Wirtschaft - Computer Science for Environmental Protection ’98 - Networked Structures in Information Technology, the Environment and Business, 1998) Tochtermann, Klaus; Riekert, Wolf Fritz; Kadric, Lilijan; Kramer, Ralf; Schmidt, Rainer; Geiger, Werner; Reißfelder, Matthias; Peter, Norbert; Doberkat, Ernst-Erich; Sobottka, Hans-Gerald; Keitel, Andree; Zitzmann, Wolf; Schütz, Thomas; Burkhardt, JacquelineHUDA (Hypermedia Techniques for Environmental Data) is a research and development project in the framework of the environmental information systems of the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Baden-Württemberg. The objective of HUDA is the design and implementation of a toolbox for the largely automatic production of environmental reports on both printed and electronic media. Exploiting as much as possible the possibilities of electronic media, extending the target audience by providing better and easy access to up-to-date information of the environment and an increasing customer orientation of environmental agencies and ministries provide additional motivation for the HUDA effort. In particular, HUDA supports the environmental report production of the German Federal Environmental Agency and the Environment Protection Agency of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
- KonferenzbeitragICT-ENSURE – A 7th Framework Program Support Action for Building the European Research Area in the Field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability(Environmental Informatics and Industrial Ecology, 2008) Tochtermann, Klaus; Granitzer, Gisela; Pillmann, Werner; Geiger, WernerICT-ENSURE is the leading European project for establishing a coherent European Research Area in the context of ICT for environmental sustainability. As a Support Action funded within the 7th Framework Program it aims at structuring a yet unstructured and distributed field. One central part in achieving this aim consists of extending existing networks to a far reaching central network including leading experts from EU27. Regular workshops in different member states and the annual conference EnviroInfo will nurture community building. The expert knowledge on development and trends, needs and demands will flow into a roadmap outlining the direction of future European research in the field. Moreover, the network will drive synergies and thus build the basis for new cooperation and research. From a technical perspective, a concept outline for a Single Information Space for the Environment in Europe, short SISE, will be developed, whereby conditions for a single point of access shall be created.

- KonferenzbeitragInformatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development, and Risk Management 20 Years Technical Committee on Environmental Informatics(Managing Environmental Knowledge, 2006) Pillmann, Werner; Geiger, Werner; Isenmann, RalfAfter its launch more than two decades ago, Environmental Informatics has become a somewhat fuzzy movement in applied informatics and computer science dealing with environmental matters to give rise to a professional society. Today, Environmental Informatics constitutes a scientific community with numerous tools, studies, publications, and resources of research. On the intellectual level, the GI TC 4.6 Environmental Informatics community with its academic background has a growing impact on government agendas, business applications in industry, and higher education programmes. As it has developed such a degree of institutionalisation, it is the right time to trace back its history (section 2), outline the current state of the field with its different forms of institutionalization (section 3), describe the emerging disciplinary contours (section 4), and illustrate major results and impacts of the field (section 5).
- KonferenzbeitragInformation System on Literature in the Field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability(Integration of Environmental Information in Europe, 2010) Lutz, Richard; Geiger, Werner; Schmitt, Christian; Schreiber, MartinThe project ICT-ENSURE aims at building a pan-European Research Area in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability. For building up and establishing a research area, the access to the hitherto existing scientific literature in the field is of major importance. Therefore, a literature information system for the field of ICT for environmental sustainability has been developed within ICT-ENSURE. The system developed contains information on the papers of 14 EnviroInfo conferences and of 4 further conferences and workshops in the field under consideration. All in all, it comprises the metadata of about 1600 and the full texts of about 1000 articles. The information system offers various search and navigation paths to this content, including full text search, attribute search and navigation in the hierarchical structure of the conference proceedings. It is available in the Web at http://lit.ict-ensure.eu with free online access. This paper describes the concept, structure and functionality of the information system including the interfaces to other literature portals. It deals with the contents and user interface of the system and gives an outlook on the future of the information service.
