- KonferenzbeitragAmbiGlasses - Information in the Periphery of the Visual Field(Mensch & Computer 2012: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Poppinga, Benjamin; Henze, Niels; Fortmann, Jutta; Heuten, Wilko; Boll, SusanneWhile more and more digital information becomes available, the demand to access information whenever and wherever increases. However, ubiquitous information provision often interferes with the user's primary tasks such as walking, driving, or reading. In this paper we present a mobile device called AmbiGlasses, a pair of glasses with 12 LEDs that illuminate the periphery of the user's field of view. A conducted user study shows that participants are able to locate the correct LED with 71% accuracy and estimate the rough location of the LED with 92% accuracy. Participants were further asked to exemplary design visualization configurations for four directions. Consistent results show that different participants encode directions with similar patterns. We argue that the AmbiGlasses can therefore be used to convey clear and intuitive navigation instructions.
- ZeitschriftenartikelHuman-Centered Design in the Energy Turnaround Project Enera – It Pays to Go Off the Beaten Track!(i-com: Vol. 18, No. 1, 2019) Fortmann, Jutta; Glanert, FrankIn this article, we give insights into the development of an ‘interface of energy’, which is developed as part of the energy turnaround project ‘enera’. This interface shall allow communication between the human and the future energy network which will be dominated by renewable energy sources and on-site power generation. We show how we applied Human-Centered Design methods to address the challenge of designing a user interface for an infrastructure that is still in development. Further, we show how this approach was successfully combined with public relations, such as feedback sessions on prototypes as part of an open Barcamp. We give insights into interviews, profiles, personas, public operations, user needs, prototyping and testing. As a special feature we conducted prototyping and prototype testing workshops in a residential house within the project region. These turned out to be very successful for many reasons, e. g., in that the natural environment served as a creative stimulator. Besides, the workshops had a lasting effect on the participants, who were members of the project as well as volunteers living in the project region.
- WorkshopbeitragIlluminated Ring – A Wearable Display to Support Fluid Intake(Mensch & Computer 2014 - Tagungsband, 2014) Lüers, Bengt; Crone, Thomas; Strokova, Veronika; Fortmann, Jutta; Boll, Susanne; Heuten, WIlkoInsufficient drinking remains a widespread problem. Reminder signals help to remind a person to drink, but are often experienced as obtrusive and impractical in everyday life. We designed Illuminated Ring, a wearable display that supports fluid intake in that it displays the time elapsed since the last drink via single point lights. In a user-centered design process, we developed an interactive ring, which we evaluated in an exploratory field study. Initial results show that Illuminated Ring is perceived as an unobtrusive display which can help to drink sufficiently.
- KonferenzbeitragKey persons in the selection and implementation of UX processes for the development of digital products: Schlüsselpersonen bei der Auswahl und Implementierung von UX-Prozessen zur Entwicklung digitaler Produkte(Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2024, 2024) Niels, Adelka; Fortmann, Jutta; Trageiser, EileenMany companies face the challenge of identifying and effectively implementing a suitable UX process that meets their individual requirements and organisational contexts. This article analyses which stakeholders in companies significantly influence the selection and implementation of UX processes in the development of digital products. Based on an online survey, the degree of involvement of various stakeholders is analysed. The study shows that UX and design specialists in particular, as well as product management, play a central role. It also shows that many companies favour flexible UX processes and prefer internal expertise. The research emphasises the need for practice-oriented frameworks and tools to support the decision-making and implementation of UX processes. The insights gained are to be incorporated into the development of a solution that is customised to the specific needs and UX maturity levels of companies in order to enable more effective UX integration.
- KonferenzbeitragKnowledge is power! – Woher Usability/UX Professionals ihr Wissen beziehen (UPA Arbeitskreis Qualitätssicherung)(Mensch und Computer 2017 - Usability Professionals, 2017) Gillessen, Monika; Fischer, Holger; Schnepel, Anke; Fortmann, Jutta; Beschnitt, MartinUsability und UX Professionals verwenden eine Vielzahl an Techniken, Methoden und Vorgehensweisen, um täglich für gebrauchstaugliche Produkte und ein positives Benutzungserlebnis zu sorgen. Aber wo genau kommt dieses Wissen eigentlich her? Was sind bekannte Standardwerke – Normen, Bücher, Webseiten, Guidelines, etc.
- WorkshopbeitragLumicons: Mapping Light Patterns to Information Classes(Mensch und Computer 2015 – Proceedings, 2015) Rauschenberger, Maria; Matviienko, Andrii; Cobus, Vanessa; Timmermann, Janko; Müller, Heiko; Löcken, Andreas; Fortmann, Jutta; Trappe, Christoph; Heuten, Wilko; Boll, SusanneThe current development of ambient light systems lacks an evaluation and guidelines in the design process. We present a study design with two complementary parts, which aims to fill the gaps in the understanding of information encoding via light. In the first part of our study we want to find out light patterns that represent different types of everyday information, and in the second part we want to verify the appropriate mappings of these light patterns suggested by participants. An appropriate mapping of the light pattern should be perceptible and distinct with a degree of attention arousal and aesthetic appearance. The goal of the study is to derive light patterns and guidelines for building new light systems and applications.
