- KonferenzbeitragAn event-based archive of soft maps for the analysis of glacier changes(Sustainability in the Information Society, 2001) Carrara, Paola; Rampini, AnnaThis paper aims to describe a system for creating and managing archives of thematic maps obtained by classifying remote sensing images by soft computing techniques. Unlike traditional spatial approaches, the main key feature for query formulation is time, thus improving the investigation on changes occurred in time ranges. Both the functionalities of the system and the data structure on which it is based are described. The system has been tested in the monitoring of Alpine glacier variations: the validation methodology and its results are illustrated as well.
- KonferenzbeitragAn inventory of Alpine glaciers: an open software approach(Sh@ring – EnviroInfo 2004, 2004) Carrara, Paola; Fresta, Giuseppe; Poggioli, Daniela; Rampini, AnnaThis contribution describes a database to collect inventory data about Alpine glaciers derived from heterogeneous sources integrating field surveys and remote sensing. It follows principles of international projects in the field. To improve perception of ongoing phenomena in the Alps, an online viewer has been also implemented exploiting open, free and standard technologies. Its main goal is easiness of interaction and of message communication.
- KonferenzbeitragMonitoring of Environmental Status through Long Term Series: Data Management System in the EnvEurope Project(EnviroInfo Dessau 2012, Part 1: Core Application Areas, 2012) Oggioni, Alessandro; Carrara, Paola; Kliment, Tomas; Peterseil, Johannes; Schentz, HerbertThe last innovations in the information science have improved developing systems relating to the creation, collection, storage, processing, modelling, interpretation, display and dissemination of data and information focused on Environmental Science (Page and Wohlgemuth, 2010). International initiatives such as SEIS (Shared Environmental Information System), GMES (Global Monitoring Environmental and Security), GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems); projects like Humboldt, NatureSDIplus, BioFresh, GIGAS; consortia such as GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility), LifeWatch, DataONE (Data Observation Network for Earth) and OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and finally legal framework in Europe (INSPIRE - 2007/2/CE) and in United States (OMB Circular A-16 - 2002) stimulated effective implementation of an information technology innovations. A common feature consists of a development of an infrastructure, which facilitates discovery, evaluation and use of data, information and knowledge. Sharing of large datasets can establish a much deeper understanding for both nature and society, open up many new avenues of research or assist to policy-makers with relation to environmental policies. (AA.VV., 2011). Paper deals with issues related to an establishment of architecture for data exchange within the Long Term Ecological domain in Europe and propose solutions to resolve them in order to provide an interoperable system.
- KonferenzbeitragThe Italian Survey on ICT in Environmental and Sustainability Research within ICT-ENSURE: Experiences and Lessons Learned(Integration of Environmental Information in Europe, 2010) Carrara, PaolaWithin the Project ICT-ENSURE, the survey of Italian programmes and projects regarding ICT in environmental and sustainability research was coordinated by the Institute of Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA) of the National Research Council (CNR), making research activities focused on the development and testing of methodologies and techniques for observing and monitoring the environment and its changes. Participation in ICTENSURE allowed reviewing the state-of-the-art in research programmes and projects about ICT for environmental and sustainability in Italy, a field where the main funding resources in the sector come from the European Commission. The main role in Italy is played by some Ministries, regional programmes and foundations but a specific focus on this subject is missing. Nevertheless, many projects are performed by Italian bodies: from the review made within ICT-ENSURE, we found that they are mainly addressed (limited) to (wireless) monitoring and communication systems, to (geo-)web sites and decision support systems. This contribution is aimed at describing the work done within the survey and to provide some critical comments with respect to the present situation in Italy and the future perspectives and risks.
