- KonferenzbeitragThe Influence of Spatial Representation on Remote Peer Consultation: A Study on Mixed Reality Remote Support for Choosing Furniture(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Tagungsband, 2021) Kahrl, Nicolas; Prilla, Michael; Blunk, OliverThis paper presents a study in which we investigated the use of different devices and mechanisms to implement Mixed Reality settings for peer recommendations on furniture. In particular, we developed a mechanism to scan rooms for new furniture to be placed in, make the resulting 3D environment available to users and display virtual furniture in it. In an exploratory study, we asked 21 participants to use this environment to support an imaginary friend in their buying decision on a couch for their living room. This was done in five conditions, including a static photo of the living room, 3D representations on mobile phones and PC screens as well as mobile (cardboard-based) VR and a dedicated VR HMD. In the study, we wanted to explore how display size, 3D experience and the fidelity of HMDs affect the quality of support for recommendations by the remote peers. Our results show that the screen-based and VR-based 3D mechanisms outperform a simple photo and that VR HMDs created highest perceptions of spatial presence and were preferred by users. Surprisingly, users perceived all mechanisms showing the 3D environment to create similar qualities of support for their recommendations. We analyze these findings and derive design recommendations from them.
Selling highly customizable goods online is difficult as this often requires intensive consultation in order for customers to find a suitable product and configuration. Furthermore, online consultations entail several difficulties that restrict the customer’s experience, such as the absence of visualizations of the desired products and their interaction partner or restricted haptic interactivity with the product. Based on literature and an ethnographic study which we conducted, we derive requirements that would need to be met to solve these problems. Following up, we discuss several options that could serve as means to fulfill these requirements. As an example, we explore using an augmented reality approach to allow customers to interact with virtual products and to inspect different features. Based on the options discussed, we formulate a scenario which details how an online consultation session for furniture sales could be conducted. It follows a fictional customer through their consultation journey from intending to buy online up to the final purchase. Finally, we discuss limitations for conducting consultations online.
- KonferenzbeitragShow me your living room: investigating the role of representing user environments in AR remote consultations(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Tagungsband, 2020) Kahrl, Nicolas; Prilla, Michael; Blunk, OliverThe study reported here investigates AR based support for remote consultations, in which an on-site user is supported by a remote helper. In such situations, it is important for the remote helper (or, in our case, the consultant) to see the environment of the person asking for support in order to relate to it. Based on literature, we created and tested different mechanisms using a 2D video stream with a captured 2D/3D texturized virtual model of the room. In addition, we compared the often-used way of fixing the remote helper’s view to the view of the on-site user with the possibility to move around freely in the 2D/3D model. The aim of the study was evaluating how to support an on-site user wearing an AR HMD. The study tested four conditions composed from these differences and with nine real furniture consultants. In the study, we compared four mechanisms in which the consultants were able to place furniture in the living room of a customer and advise the customer on their purchase. We found that there were hardly any differences in task load, social presence or perceived support between the four different conditions. However, participants had clear preferences for certain conditions and aspects of them. From our analysis, we provide recommendations for the design of mixed reality support for remote consultations.
